Arctic Futures & the Postnormal Perspective
June 2014 | London
As part of a collaboration with The Center for Postnormal Policy and Futures Studies (@CPPFS), we were delighted to be invited to talk at the inaugural ‘Last Friday London Gatherings’ event organised by the Association of Professional Futurists.
Our presentation, titled ‘Arctic Futures & the Postnormal Perspective‘, sought to combine our own Arctic futures approaches with the Postnormal futures analysis method being developed by CPPFS called ‘3 Tomorrows’. This is part of our joint ongoing and exploratory work centred around two key propositions, namely:
-
How is current thinking on Arctic futures ‘problematised’ and can 3 Tomorrows be an effective way of generating new insights or providing other forms of utility if adopted?
-
Do interactive artefact creation exercises enable people to meaningfully explore key themes from both the Arctic and the 3 Tomorrows elements combined?
After presenting an introduction to Arctic affairs, we then investigated the 3 Tomorrows / Postnormal methodology before engaging participants (via pre-scripted scenarios) in the creation of postcard visualisations of their individual possible alternative futures.
We’d like to thank everyone who took part for their active participation and feedback and we are currently working on a more detailed write-up of the event to include fully mocked-up visuals of the final postcards which were created.
